Lazy weekend afternoons had me channel hopping, and I stumbled across an old adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express (1974) I remember watching this film twenty years ago and falling in love with all things Agatha Christie and her epic detective Hercule Poirot. To this day I haven’t read a single book by her, although I own a good few.

One of my favourite things about the first part of the book is how each chapter begins with a sensory experience, usually of taste, which goes on to evoke the memory Leila shares with us.
Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld
Sittenfeld manages to create a three-dimensional character who the reader grows to appreciate and understand through the course of the novel. Hilary Rodham Clinton doesn’t owe us this much of her life just because she is a public figure, but the book, built around a great deal of nonfiction sources, allows us to begin to understand some of the situations and decisions she is faced with, and is very on the nose about the different expectations we have of women and men in public office.
