“Knowledge is not a static possession, but a dynamic process of aligning one’s intellect with the heartbeat of the universe.” Muhammad Asad

Welcome to This Hybrid Reads. I’m a British-Kashmiri Muslim writer, book lover, and keen cultural observer navigating the intersections of identity, literature, and modern politics. This space is dedicated to exploring how the stories we read shape the world we live in.
What You’ll Find Here
If you are looking for sugar-coated commentary, you are in the wrong place. Here, we dive deep into:
- Unapologetic Book Reviews: Bi-weekly breakdowns of non-fiction, fiction, and ancient retellings that challenge mainstream narratives.
- Identity & Belonging: Honest reflections on the British Muslim diaspora, media representation, and navigating life at the crossroads of multiple cultures.
- Social Justice & Politics: Sharp critiques of political structures, media bias, and historical colonial echoes.
- Lifestyle & Musings: Honest personal essays covering everything from the search for nuanced Muslim fiction to traveling with a healthy dose of skepticism.
My Story
I started This Hybrid Reads because I rarely saw my own complex, multifaceted reality reflected in mainstream media. As someone who holds an intimate understanding of “Britishness” while simultaneously watching the media treat my identity as a threat, I realized that reading and writing are acts of reclamation.
What began as a personal reading journal has evolved into a platform for dissecting global politics, deconstructing colonial legacies, and finding solace in brilliant prose. I believe that literature should make us uncomfortable, challenge our biases, and force us to ask the hard questions about the world around us.
3 Fast Facts About Me
- The Wardrobe Shift: Autumn/Winter is officially my favorite fashion season—give me short, cold days and long nights of reading any day.
- Halal Romance Critic: I am always on the hunt for fiction that captures the nuance of older Muslim readers without compromising on authenticity.
- Paris Skeptic: Ask me about the time my husband bought us romantic tickets to Paris and I spent the trip analyzing state-sponsored socio-politics.

Hi Mina,
I enjoyed reading your review of Chai at Cinnamon Gardens, and wanted to know more about you and your blogs. I find it weird that you introduce yourself as a woman of colour. Why not explain where you were born, and your nationality? It’s only through this information that you will appear more genuine and earnest in your reviews. I do not generally read personal reviews of books by individual people, rather look for reputed reviewing groups, but since I agree with your perspectives on Chai , thought I would check who you are, and hence my comments.
best wishes,
Marian

Thanks for that feedback. I share a whole host of information about myself in various ways through my social media and in my blogs. My identity and politics are through my life experiences, as a woman of colour, and many of these experiences are intersectional, so other women of colour, regardless of where they are from or what their nationality is, will be able to relate to it.
Hope that helps you.
Mina
