From the systemic legal erasures of British colonial India to the psychological paralysis of the French occupier in Algeria, the veil has never been a submission to man, it is a private covenant with Allah and a radical reclamation of bodily sovereignty. While modern Western institutions pathologize modest clothing to mask their own catastrophic failures in protecting women from domestic and structural violence, the covered woman stands as an unyielding force. She possesses the audacity to see, but completely refuse to be seen, rejecting the mandate to become a mere commodity for sale at the capitalist marketplaces of the world.
